Gymnocalycium doppianum

Gymnocalycium doppianum is a form of G andreae. Small flowers, very yellow, likes to clump

Gymnocalycium erinaceum R726b

Large silky flowers and the pink in the centre is so vibrant it makes the flower look like it is illuminated from within.

This plant has a nice blue green body - I have seen pictures of other that are more plane green.

Gymnocalycium gibbosum v fenellii

Gymnocalycium gibbosum v fenellii is another one that has gone much browner this year.

Good large flower.

And here is the fruit

Gymnocalycium gibbosum ssp radekii JPR70/157

This plant has gone completely brown since last year when it was green and glossy.

June 2015 update - here are the flowers.

Gymnocalycium altagraciense P119

Last year I said that I though G altagraciense was rather boring and it only had one flower. Look at it now. Not so boring!

From Argentina and not discovered until 1988 because it hides when not in flower.

Can be called G amerhauseri.

Gymnocalycium saglionis

Big old Gymnocalycium saglionis coming into bud.

Gymnocalycium multiflorum x ritterianum

Gymnocalycium multiflorum x ritterianum coming into bud. Long spines and glossy body.

Also called G monvillei.

From Argentina.

Gymnocalycium brachypetalum

G brachypetalum coming into bud for the first time. I have had this plant for a couple of years and this year it's body has gone particularly brown.

Also know as G gibbosum ssp gibbosum.

Gymnocalycium marquezii

G marquezii just coming into bud. Apparently it can be called G pflanzii ssp pflanzii but as far as I am concerned every one knows that G marquezii is the one with the apricot flowers.

Gymnocalycium horridispinum

How horrid are the spines on horridispinum? Quite horrid I would say but this is only an young one and just coming into bud for the first time.

June 15 Update - a massive flower as big as the plant itself.

Gymnocalycium striglianum

AUGUST 2015

MAY 2015

Now I bought this striglianum a couple of years ago - but is it really striglianum? I expected the body to be darker and the spines to be blacker.

What do you think?

Gymnocalycium neuhuberi

Here is G neuhuberi with the first two flowers from a good clump of buds. It is interesting to think that this gymno wasn't discovered until 1988, over 10 years since I started growing cacti!

I understand that the flowers are supposed to be perfumed but I have to say I haven't smelt it myself.

Gymnocalycium bruchii

This is part of an old plant that won the trophy for best cactus in the junior section of the local NCSS show in 1979. I have struggled to maintain a decent clump as it seems to keep dying back from the middle and is particularly prone to wretched mealy bug. I suspect that I will break up the remains of this clump and start again with a number of small heads.

Gymnocalycium spegazzinii JO854.01

Anyone who reads this blog will know that spegazzainiis are my favourite gymnos. Here is a nice new one that has just arrived.

No idea what the field number refers to so feel free to let me know if you can.

Gymnocalycium bruchii v niveum R727

A splendid variety of bruchii with denser spination and an excellent early crop of flowers on a tiny plant. Offsetting already so looking forward to growing a good clump.

Gynmocalycium albiaerolatum P220

A young G albiaerolatum - with a massive great tap root underneath.

Gymnocalycium andreae v grandiflorum

I expect nothing less than big yellow flowers from this one.

And here it is - interesting how vibrant the yellow is when it first opens and then fades after a few days.

Gymnocalycium maznetteri

Here is G manznetteri. What could it be? No mention in Mr Charles or NCL. Could it be G hamatum with Mr Charles lists as marsoneri ssp megatae? I doubt it as the spines are thinner and flatter to the body. Or could it be misspelt  andreae ssp matznetteri? The flower is going to be pink not yellow. So this leads me to think it is bruchii ssp matznetteri.

Anyway, it is happily clumping and flowering so that's good enough for me for now.

Any comments or clarification on the name appreciated.

Update: here are the flowers. I am going for the bruchii connection

Gynmocalyicum mardelplatense

MAY 2017

MAY 2015

New for 2015. I can't find out much about G mardelplatense. not included by Mr Charles or NCL.  A suggestion that it may be a form of G hyptiacanthum but I don't see it myself. Let's see what he flowers come out like.

Any comments?

Update: Here are the flowers - none the wiser, but lovely big pink blooms!

Gynmocalycium mazanense v hossei

A young G mazanense v hossei, or just call it hossei. Darker skin than some of the descriptions I have seen and just coming into bud. I like the long spines.

June 2015 update - here is the flower:

Gymnocalycium denudatum cv Jan Suba

JULY 2015

Assumed the flower would be pink - wrong!

MAY 2015

New in for 2015, G denudatum cv Jan Suba. Dendatum's come from Brazil. Jan Suba is a hybrid with G baldianum. I like the tangled curled spines.

Gymnocalycium berchtii

Here is G berchtii looking particularly deflated - come back in a few weeks and we will see if it puffs up again once the watering starts.

And here it is all puffed up.

Gymnocalycium cordobense Quilino

Welcome to the 2015 growing season. It has been a slow cold start to spring in the UK this year so as the gymnos are in an unheated greenhouse they must stay bone dry until we can be sure of no more frost. I like it when a dry gymno goes flat so I will post a couple of the flattest.

July 15 update: here it is with buds
